ABOUT SOLIDARITY
This is 2020. A time of crisis, in which the promises of tomorrow have been made uncertain by lockdowns, political unrest, and personal stressors. The changes we have experienced in this time, whether in the physical or mental realm, are unique to each of us. In our new, isolated environments, many have turned inward to explore their innermost thoughts. Some have taken this time as an opportunity to hide away, finding solace from the chaos of society. Some indulged in their own creativity. Some spiraled into loneliness and misery, and others were left silenced. For better or for worse, we have all been impacted by our new situations. This is a time that will define our generation for years to come, but it will not define what we choose to make of it.
The artists of VPSC56 at the University of Toronto Scarborough have chosen to be resilient, allowing their art to speak to their various experiences. Although not every piece in this exhibition directly deals with COVID-19, each piece is an expression of deep thoughts, desires, dreams, fears, and connections that have been impacted by COVID-19 in one way or another. In coming to terms with this new reality, these students use their art to navigate a changed world by delving into present dilemmas, by reflecting on emotions and ideas of the past, and by speaking on social justice issues that will impact our future.
Remaining connected to each other is crucial in a time like this. We no longer live our lives side by side, but six feet apart and for some souls, six feet under. Our hearts are with them. Although we share the same feeling of uncertainty caused by this global disruption, know that we are also connected through hope—the root of our survival. As we face the demise of some of our old ways of life, we have also been given new opportunities and new goals.
The artists of VPSC56 invite you to approach this exhibition with open eyes and open hearts, and to come forward with your own thoughts and experiences on this unique moment in time. Pay attention to which experiences resonate with you and which ones provide you a window into new perspectives. This is solidARiTy.
