Wing is studying Arts Management, Studio Art and Curatorial Studies at the University of Toronto. She is interested in performance art. While her practice questions the nuances between art and life, body and social relations, her ideas are not confined by any medium as she likes to explore a variety of forms of expression. Her recent works “A Walk in the Park” and “YOU CANT LIVE WITHOUT ME” are performed with cameras to focus on the bodily experience during the pandemic. Through exaggeration, stimulation and repetition, she wants her audience to reflect upon ‘now what’ physically, mentally and emotionally.

Wing was awarded UTSC FADO Time-based Award in 2019.

A Walk In The Park (2020)

Nowhere is entirely safe now. We are afraid of contamination. The act of mask-wearing as a new habit is in conversation with our old habit of the need to be outside, be in places. This work explores the hyper-awareness in terms of the spatial relationship between people, and the approach of decontextualization. Through layers of venues (China Town, the park, and the video online) to perform and present this work, decontextualization takes place to construct this work to represent our discomfort and confusion about places and space during the pandemic. The audience is displaced. None really witness the whole part of the performance (You can only watch the video; while the audience in the park or China Town can only watch my partial performance live).

The title: ‘A walk in the park’ is inspired by the idiom as such meaning something that is easy/ simple to do. It creates an irony about the simple habit of mask-wearing in contrast to the performance action. As this work is constantly decontextualized by different venues, it also prompts the literal and technical question of whether I am really 'walking' in the park.

This work explores our relationship with the screen in terms of digital reliance. Screen time is getting longer and longer these days due to the pandemic context. The gifs are resembling the experience of screen fatigue through afterimage effects and anxious, compact looping of eye exercises. To experience the work, you have to trust the stranger artist and let the artwork itself intrude your personal digital space in order to ‘install’ the work. Digital interpersonal relationships ( the viewer, the artist as another digital user, and the computer, the 'A.I." as a human-like entity) are interesting. As viewers get 'hypnotized' by the overwhelming looking gifs, who is speaking the message?
