Hyebin Kim is a digital media artist born in Suwon, Korea. She studies at the University of Toronto, with a specialist degree in Arts Management and a minor in Studio Art. Her interest in digital media ranges from graphic art to moving GIF images.
Hyebin creates artworks based on her personal experiences, ranging from exploring the five different senses, to telling her story as being an international student/newcomer in Toronto.

This piece explores the visual representation of sounds, with two sounds I find pleasing and two sounds I find unpleasing. Visual representation of pleasing sounds is shown in pastel colors with rounded edges, mint and baby blue, to show the calm and relaxed feelings I get from these two sounds. For unpleasing sounds, I used yellow and red with sharp edges to show how these sounds evoke an aggressive and strong feelings.

This piece explores the four stages of international students cultural adjustment, which are known as honeymoon stage, hostility stage, humor stage, and home stage. Honeymoon stage refers to when an individual is excited to move to a new environment, which is shown through a visual representation of plane departure. Hostility stage is when an individual experiences culture shock and homesick, shown through turbulence stage. Humor stage is when the individual starts to participate in various local community activities to have themselves adjusted to the new environment, shown through two passengers communicating. Lastly, home stage refers to when the individual finally gets adjusted to the new cultural environment, which is shown through plane arrival. These four stages are particularly shown through plane-related activities, flying from Seoul, South Korea to Toronto, Canada based off from the artist’s personal experience.
