KELLY CHAN

Born and raised in Toronto, Kelly Chan is a young artist who enjoys creating artworks at her own interests. With her love of experimentation, the diverse mediums of painting, sculpture, sound, performance and digital media she explores, questions the self and what it truly means to be an artist. Currently, as a Studio Arts major, English and Theatre Performance Studies student, her works delve deep into various aspects far beyond the surfaces of general art. She has participated in multiple art exhibitions held at the University of Toronto and was awarded alongside her class, the ACM Connects Award in 2018. Through her art, Kelly wants us all to believe that our passions shouldn’t have any limitations and that anything is possible.

RED is a series artwork that speaks about transformation and colour. Each piece of the series contains three sketch layers, each with different colours of opaqueness and opacity combined to achieve the slight variations of the same colour red. Together, the five pieces showcase the different changes of the same colour seen in individual maple leaves during the fall season. More specifically, this concept of transformation and changing through time links with how various growth patterns and aging in each individual’s eyes affect how their eyes see the colour red differently. My intention is to let the viewers experience these different readings of the same colour and evoke communication and connection of their personal thoughts through the text of my artwork. For each work of the series, the top right corner displays a simple short phrase that deals with my personal insight on the transformation of the fall season. I chose the theme of colour as my artwork topic because colour is such a broad, open ended concept to explore. I was genuinely interested in how red is changed according to who was looking at the colour, but as the work started to become more personal, red now signifies the change in seasons of the maple trees. Born and raised in Canada, the maple leaf that displays on the Canadian flag drew significant memories and images of my childhood visiting the maple farms in Toronto yearly with my family. It was such pride and fascination to be able to see each individual leaf and observe the transformations of the colour itself.
